Focus (Review)

Published by Courtney Russell / March 21,2015

Focus a film written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. Starring Will Smith,Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street). Focus is  about  Nicky Spurgeon ( Will Smith ) a master con-man looking to set up his next big score with his new lesser experienced half Jess Barrett (Margot Robbie). The movie was divided into 2 major plot narratives, we have the first half of the movie introducing the lead characters Nicky and his evolving relationship with his new apprentice Jess. The first half shows us a few cons and introduces us to the science behind actually pulling one off, whether it be small or big. We see the growth develop between Nicky and Jess, and right away we can tell that these too have a compelling attraction towards each other. But that abruptly ends as these emotions really get to our main protagonist Nicky. We see Nicky get somewhat conflicted as he tries to resist giving in to his feelings, we watch him get attached, something that a con-man in his level desperately tries to avoid, he just can’t afford to fall in love, because if he gets too attached he will undoubtedly lose control and if he loses control, in all ends he loses focus of the tasks set in front of him. Quote by Nicky from the movie, ” At the end of the day this is a game of focus, attention is like a spotlight and our job is to dance in the darkness, the human brain is slow and cannot multitask, human behavior is very predictable, I touch you here I steal from here, I tap you here I steal from here…If you get that focus, you can take what you want, “ and that my readers is what the film played out to us.

I enjoyed this movie, it’s to me one of Will Smith’s better movies compared to what he has done in the last 5 years. Even though the first half was a lot stronger than the second half of the movie it kept me fairly entertained and I actually was looking forward to the narrative at the end of each con. I can fairly actually give this movie 3 out of 5 stars and honestly I am looking forward to seeing both Will and Margot work together again in the upcoming Suicide squad movie that is set to be released in 2016 with Will Smith playing the iconic Deadshot and Margot set to play the lunatic mistress to the clown prince of crime Harley Quinn.

That’s it for today, look out for more reviews again and I will probably be launching my Youtube channel soon so look out for that as well, until then like our Facebook page and keep visiting our website for more movie trailers and movies reviews.
