8 Box Office Failures of 2015

Published by Courtney Russell / December 30, 2015

2015 gave us a lot of Box Office Movies but not all were made to reign supreme at the box office, while some broke records and others faired well in sales, there were also some that failed connect with audience in regards to ticket sales. Here is a list of 8 poorly performed movies for 2015.

1.Steve Jobs

Made on an estimated production budget of $30 million, Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs starring Michael Fassbender has yet to earn its money back more than a month after its release. Two weeks of limited release earned the biopic $2.2 million, adding $9.81 million from 2,493 theaters on its wide release. The movie's worldwide total hit just $22.79M by mid-November, dropping back out of theaters.

2.The Seventh Son

Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore hit 2,875 theaters in Seventh Son in February. Despite its star power, the movie made just $7.2 million on its opening weekend. After six weeks in theaters, Son earned a domestic total of $17.2 million. The action flick only broke its estimated $95 million budget when an additional $96.95 million came in from the foreign market.

3.ROCK THE KASBAH

With an estimated production budget of $15 million, the Bill Murray-starring Rock the Kasbah made just $1.47 million at 2,012 theaters on its opening weekend. After about a month in theaters, the comedy had made just short of $3 million, well under its budget.

4.PAN

Pan quickly lost its magic after a $15.3 million opening weekend at 3,515 theaters. The fairy tale flick dropped down in both theater count and weekly gross, posting a domestic total of $34.06 by the time it was on just hundreds of screens in mid-November. A worldwide gross of $123.06 still can't measure up to Pan's estimated $150 million budget.

5.OUR BRAND IS CRISIS

Even Sandra Bullock couldn't save the box office blunder that was Our Brand is Crisis. The political drama opened to $3.24 million at 2,202 theaters, giving the star her worst wide-release opening of all time. Dropped to just 50 theaters as of mid-November, Crisis posts a domestic total gross of $6.95 million, well under its estimated production budget of $28 million.

6.Jem and the Holograms

Despite months of hype and nostalgic anticipation, Jem and the Holograms failed to fill seats for showtime. The reinterpretation of the '80s series made just $1.38 million at 2,413 theaters on its opening weekend. The theater count took a nosedive after a dismal second week, bringing the movie's worldwide grand total to $2.2 million on an estimated $5 million budget.

6.FANTASTIC FOUR

Fantastic Four opened in a huge way, screening in 3,995 theaters. With that total, the movie made $25.68 million on its opening weekend, hitting the No. 2 spot. It was pulled months later with a domestic total of $56.1 million, well under its estimated $120 million budget. An additional $111.86 million in foreign ticket sales kept it from debt.

1.CHAPPIE

Chappie opened in the No. 1 spot on a quiet weekend with a mediocre total of $13.34 million at 3,201 theaters. The weekly gross only slowed down from there as the movie completed its run with a domestic total of $31.57 million. The estimated $49 million budget was reached thanks to the $70.5 made abroad.

What awaits us next year? Only time and numbers will tell.

Have a Happy 2016!

2016 THE YEAR OF HEROES AND VILLAINS

2016 – THE YEAR OF HEROES AND VILLAINS

Published by Vecas Grant / December 17,2015

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE!!

With last week’s reveal of the X-Men Apocalypse trailer the stage has been set for what will be arguable one of the biggest year in comic book movie history. It’s a five-way showdown between Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Captain America Civil War, X-Men Apocalypse, Suicide Squad and Deadpool. As a huge fan of comic book movies I couldn’t help but have a huge Grinch-like grin as I saw the trailer unfolding before my eyes, “What a time to be alive” – those were my exact words as the trailer came to an end.

We have come a long way from the comic book movies of old, namely the 1980s and 1990s. Back then we were lucky to get a comic book movie of any sort and even when we did it was usually a campy standalone cash grab. The adaption of a more narrative driven, cohesive universe by the genre has opened the doors to what has amounted to what I like to call ‘Live-action comics’. The 2000s has been very gracious to the Comic book Genre and it doesn’t seem to be slowing anytime soon with movies scheduled up to 2020.

If you are anything like me, who grew up reading comics or watching the cartoons of all these heroes and villains (Looking at you Suicide Squad J), then you would be feeling the exact way I do when the thought of 2016 and all that it has in store for us comes cross your mind. We can expect many epic stories and clashes between Heroes and Villains, Heroes and Heroes, Villains and Villains but, it is us the viewers who will be the ultimate winner once the dust has settled. To sum up my thoughts on the road ahead for us “comic nerds” – WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE!

Will Smith Dead?

Will Smith Dead?

Published by Courtney Russell / December 14,2015

News just in guys, Captain Steven Hiller the top shot US Airforce Pilot that was played by actor Will Smith in 1996's Independence Day is dead and won't be making it back for the sequel Independence Day : Resurgence.

Smith's character Hiller was a U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 pilot and Captain of the Black Knights squadron. He was later promoted to Colonel and died test piloting the ESD's first alien hybrid fighter.  This information was gathered from Warof1996.com - a website that is dedicated to the history of the alien invasion that happened 20 years ago (a.k.a. the year that Roland Emmerich's Independence Day was released). Going through the posted timeline after the events of the invasion, you can find a headline from a broadcast that reads, "Alien Tech Malfunction Kills Col. Hiller."

This apparently happened on April 27, 2007, and there is a corresponding blurb that explains what happened:

"While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller’s valor in the War of ‘96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan."

Hiller is survived by his common law wife Jasmine Dubrow who was played by Vivica A. Fox and his son Dylan Hiller played by Jessie Usher. A large ensemble is set to return that also includes returning stars Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, and Brent Spiner in addition to newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Joey King, Maika Monroe, William Fichtner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Angelababy and Sela Ward. Based on a script by Carter Blanchard, the film will be arriving in theaters as part of next summer's massive lineup of blockbusters - and will be ready for your viewing pleasure on June 24, 2016.

12 Days Of Deadpool

Published by Courtney Russell / December 14,2015.

Actor Ryan Reynolds seems to be living it up as his new alter-ego Deadpool. Ryan looks poised and most comfortable in his new role as the merc with a mouth and he is set on kicking off the Holiday Season with a 12 step promotional gimmic.

Over the next dozen days, Fox is getting into the holiday spirit by unveiling a whole bunch of new and wildly inappropriate Deadpool posters and clips on a variety of websites, all culminating in the premiere of the brand-new Deadpool trailer on Christmas Day. Because, really, what better way to celebrate the holiday than by watching an ad for a movie about Ryan Reynolds as a murderous mutant assassin who likes to stab and shoot people and make really dirty jokes?

The party already kicked off with the 1st promotional video which can be seen below and Ryan as Deadpool promises to bring some additional naughtiness to the season.

There was also a debut of the brand new Deadpool poster, the poster also carries a nice Joker reference in the tag line.

Here it is, via Entertainment Weekly:

“It’s time for Saint Wade to put the ‘win’ in winter wonderland,” Deadpool teases in the video below, which lists what outlets or content fans can look forward to each day of the brand new holiday.

The new Deadpool trailer will debut on Dec. 25, while the film hits theaters on Feb. 12.

Suicide Squad?

Who Are The Suicide Squad?

Published by Courtney Russell / October 26,2015

I'm sure some if not all of you might be hearing the latest buzz concerning the Suicide Squad. Either it be in your News Feed, on Instagram or maybe on YouTube and I bet some of you might very well be wondering; Who Are ? or What Is ? The Suicide Squad. Well mywatchlinks.com is here and we will be providing a short summary of who the group is and what to expect from their Movie which is set for release for August 5th of next year.

The Suicide Squad, also known as Task Force X (the name of a closely related but independent supervisory organization), is a name for two fictional organizations appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The modern Suicide Squad is an antihero "strike team" of incarcerated, death row supervillains; acting as deniable, covert assets of the United States government, it undertakes high-risk, black ops missions in exchange for commuted prison sentences. The group operates out of Belle Reve Penitentiary, under the directorship of Amanda Waller. This concept -- of the Suicide Squad functioning as a sort of unconventional, secret prison work-release program -- helps explain why many of the DC Universe's supervillains remain perpetually on the loose, no matter how many times they are apprehended, convicted, and incarcerated for their latest crimes.

The original Suicide Squad appeared in six issues of The Brave and the Bold (vol. 1). The groups story revolved around a quartet of non-powered adventurers fighting superpowered opponents. Their adventures often involved conflict with dinosaurs, giants, and other monstrous creatures. In the team's final mission, Dr. Evans dies, and Jess Bright is captured by forces of the Soviet Union and transformed into the monstrous Koshchei. If you get lost I have the Wikepedia link (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_Squad" target="_blank">click me) to you can catch up.

Moving away from this group the Suicide Squad later evolved into a staple for DC Comics as fans were drawn to the allure of there favorite DC villains acting as somewhat heroes. We have fan favorites such as Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Killer Croc, Captain Bomerang and in some incarnations the Joker.

With the massive impact that the Suicide Squad has had on the DC Universe Warner Brothers and DC Comics have seen it fit to have the team adapted to the big screen, with some big shot actors taking on various roles. So far the adaptation seems promising, especially with the release of the trailer earlier this year at the San Diego Comic Con, the trailer actually Debut along side the new Batman V Superman Movie which is also set for release next year. With both mega super powers we can truly expect DC Comics line of movies to dominate the box office next year, even with stiff competition from Marvel. Marvel is also set to make big moves next year with the release of Captain America Civil war and Fox is also set to follow through with Deadpool and X-Men Apocalypse.

We can truly expect big things next year with Jared Leto who Plays this versions' incarnation of the Joker describing his role as a "nearly Shakespearean character" and a "beautiful disaster of a character". Empire Magazine released some pics of the now infamous Joker, along with some words from the award winning method actor.

"Jared Leto’s transformation as the joker is complete. The actor’s full costume for his joker character in Suicide Squad was unveiled on the cover of Empire

The pale, green haired villain dons a purple crocodile trench coat sans shirt, baring his abs and eerie body tattoos. He’s also wearing loose-fitting pajama pants that read “Arkham” — the asylum many of Batman’s foes, including the joker, escaped from — and going barefoot. Leto’s look is topped off with loads of black eye makeup to perfect the "psycho killer's" creepy signature stare.

To transform into the Prince of Crime, the Oscar winner admitted it took a mental and physical toll on him.

Ben Affleck's Batman Suit & Armor

Ben Affleck's Batman Suit & Armor

Published by Courtney Russell / October 8,2015

The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice costume designer Michael Wilkinson recently gave some insight on some of costume designs for the movie, the one that caught our attention particularly was the design for Ben Affleck's Batsuit.

Concept Art

"For Batman, it was really important for Zack that we created a whole new Batman," Wilkinson told DC All Access. "And he said, 'The most important thing for our Batman is that he comes across a real hulking, big guy.' He's super-pumped up. He's going to be even bigger than Superman's silhouette. So his strength is not through armor and gadgets and things, it is that he is a tower of muscle. Zack Snyder is a huge fan of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and we looked a lot at that silhouette." Adding that Ben Affleck's Batman cowl has full-range of motion.

Screen Shot from the Movie Trailer

From what we have seen in the trailers and in the recent showcase of the Batsuit and Armor at this years' Comic Con we can expect a to see a truly fearsome comic book like representation of Batman.  With the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on March 25, 2016, the DC Extended Universe, as they’re calling their connected world of films, kicks off in earnest. Later that year, Suicide Squad follows, and after that, we’re getting Wonder Woman, Aquaman, two Justice League movies, and much, much more. It’s a good time to be a fan of comic book movies.

X-Men Becoming Star Wars?

Posted on October 8, 2015 at 7:40 PM Comments comments (0)

X-Men Becoming Star Wars?
Published by Courtney Russell / October 8,2015

Universe buidling seems to be all the rage now in Hollywood seeing that now studios such as Disney's Marvel, Fox , Warner Brothers DC and other big names are now expanding on their stories and characters in a bid in combining them into one shared Universe, much like what Marvel and Disney did with the Avengers, Antman and Gaurdian of the Galaxy. One of the biggest and most successful of these is Star Wars, and that’s the model that 20th Century Fox as a roadmap for their own superhero realm. Much like Star Wars X-Men are looking to combine the past with the future culminating into one big anthology. The question is can they stay true to the continuity, one of the biggest issues that comic books themselves now face?

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter about his latest project, Ridley Scott’s The Martian, producer Simon Kinberg, who is all over Fox’s superhero universe, had some interesting things to say about how they’re approaching this world.

He said: "It's almost like the way the Star Wars movies now are. The Episodes are the mainline movies, and then you have the stand-alone movies. The X-Men flagship is [Michael] Fassbender, [James] McAvoy, Jen [Lawrence], and Nick Hoult, and then we have the stand-alone movies."

With Fox deciding on their new model we can surely expect the universe to broaden as more characters are given their own standalone films.
With actors like Hugh Jackman's character Wolverine coming close to the end of their run. Which characters can we expect Fox to focus on next? Now  seeing that the 2016 Deadpool movie will also have cameos from some already established X-Men such as the metal muscle clad Colossus.

After Apocalypse hits in May of next year, the Channing Tatum-fronted Gambit is slated to hit the following October. And not because Apocalypse is the last in this latest X-Men trilogy, producer Simon Kinberg doesn’t deny the possibility of making more films, and he says: "I would love to keep making movies with that cast."
The future is still undecided and all we can do as fans is wait to see more of these awsome stories being made on the big screen.
